What is coaching?
Coaching has been applied in enterprise management and human development since it was accidentally invented by an American tennis coach, Timothy Gallwey, 30 years ago.    It was developed and applied in the field of enterprise management and psychology and has now evolved into an important corporate management and individual development tool around the world.

In the 1970s, when Gallwey was coaching tennis players, he noticed: “As long as I let players focus their attention on the tennis instead of demonstrating skills to them, they will make progress faster than those taught in the traditional way of focusing on skills or theories.”  Through repeated experiments, Gallwey tasted the traditional way of Coaching tennis, which was for the coach to demonstrate, the trainees to imitate, and the coach to correct.  Many trainees focused on whether their movements were right, and were disoriented when the ball

came. But when the coach did not demonstrate, merely requiring trainees to focus on the tennis ball, the trainees cared more about the perfect statue.  Meanwhile, the coach did not set specific rules for ball serving, instead he asked questions like: “How can you adjust your body to catch the incoming ball?”  As the trainees focus on the ball rather than the moves, they automatically adjusted their action to catch the ball.  He discovered that tennis trainees’ confidence and performance dropped when the coach spotted the trainee’s mistakes and tried to correct them.  When the trainees were relaxed from their mind, they felt better and their performance improved, then they corrected their mistakes automatically and unconsciously, and therefore, they mastered the essential technique of playing tennis.

Gallwey’s discovery was rapidly adopted by companies such as AT&T and IBM in their corporate management and evolved into a systematic and pragmatic teaching discipline, called coaching.  The coaching practitioners believe everybody possesses the talent and resources that he or she needs to achieve his or her goals, and the coach just needs to observe and raise open-ended questions to the coachee and to let the coachee grasp their direction and gain the strength to accomplish goals.

With 30 years of development, coaching has been widely adopted in various fields such as corporate management, leadership development, education, personal development, career development, health and fitness.  It has been proven to be very effective.

Currently, there are many coach association and accreditation institutions in the world, like ICF.  Many coaching and abundant coaching skills and successful cases have been accumulated over the years, which are now widely applied by the world’s top 500 enterprises.

Coaching focuses on coachee’s goals and directions. Coaching helps coachee to listen to his/her inner voices and to strengthen his/her inner resources, enabling him/her to gather the energy and find the path to accomplish his/her goals
